KHS Teachers Working Group: This group includes KHS teachers and counselors who are especially concerned with preventing violence in the Kailua-Waimanalo community. Like the KHS Safe Schools Task Force, this working group offers the APIYVPC with guidance on future research projects and analyses of data already collected. The teachers working group also advises the APIYVPC on methods of data collection that will allow for the most efficient collection process and allow the KHS faculty and student body to be part of a useful but also minimally disruptive process. This group meets with APIYVPC staff once per month on the KHS campus.

The Teachers Work Group assisted the APIYVPC in planning and carrying out a period of the “Freshmen Jumpstart Day,” a day in which the incoming KHS freshmen attend the first day of school before all other students (July 28, 2006). On this day, freshmen become a little more familiar with the campus and high school life. With logistical help from the KHS Teachers Work Group, the APIYVPC staff and a group of community leaders were able to facilitate one class period in which every incoming freshman watched skits on resolving stressful situations in a non-violent, healthy manner. The skits were based on previous APIYVPC research conducted with KHS. KHS juniors and seniors from the previous school year wrote and acted out the skits, and edited them for dvd’s.
