Session 1: Overview of Research and Publishing
This session provided an overview of the past and present work done at the Asian/Pacific Islander Youth Violence Prevention Center. The Center has administered a number of surveys to both students and parents in local communities. A panel of speakers provided a general discussion about what constitutes a good peer-reviewed, publishable paper. A “pretest” of information was also administered at this time.

Session 2: Literature Review
During this session, Dr. Katy Irwin provided an overview of current literature on risk and protective factors surrounding youth violence. Jodie Mattos, a librarian from the University of Hawai‘i came to review resources provided by the University for literature reviews.

Session 3: Quantitative Analyses
This session was an overview of types of measurement and statistical analyses. Tests such as chi-square, t-tests, correlations, ANOVAs, and Multiple Regression were discussed. At this point, most of the trainees have selected their topic and variables to be used in their manuscript. This session was designed to prepare trainees for the following session on running the appropriate analyses.

Session 4: Statistics Workshop
During this session, trainees will be instructed in using SAS statistical system to run the analyses for their manuscripts. A number of the API staff members have been trained in SAS and will assist the trainees in their analyses. The seminar will be facilitated by Anand Samtani and will cover basic analyses such as frequencies, chi-square, correlations, multiple regression, and logistic regression. Visiting Professor Jack McArdle (from USC) will be presenting on Structural Equation Modeling (SEM).

Session 5: Interpretation of Results
After performing their analyses, the trainees will discuss their results and print outs with the group. This session will be aimed at the interpretation of results and how it can be translated into a succinct results section.

Session 6: Discussion
This session will focus on the challenges and helpful hints to write a discussion section. A panel of speakers will advise trainees on what needs to be included in the discussion section and some common mistakes often made in this section.

Session 7: Internal Review
This session and the following session will be dedicated to internal/peer review. There will be “teams,” where there will be one primary peer reviewer and one primary mentor reviewer to serve as consultants to the trainee. Other participants will assist in the review process by providing constructive feedback for the trainee. At the end of this session, each trainee will provide a few potential peer-reviewed journals to submit the manuscript.

Session 8: Internal Review (cont.)
This session is a continuation from the previous week. Also during this session, formatting of the article according to the “instructions to authors” will be discussed.

Session 9: Final Presentation and Evaluation
