The Asian/Pacific Islander Youth Violence Prevention Center (APIYVPC) has partnered with four community working groups from the Kailua-Waimanalo community. These groups help to guide the APIYVPC through our research and mobilization efforts. To learn more about each work group, follow the links below:
On March 21 & 22, 2006, representatives from Kailua High School, Queen Lili’uokalani Children’s Center, and the Asian/Pacific Islander Youth Violence Prevention Center participated in the annual Community Action Seminar, organized by the State of Hawaii Attorney General's Office. This seminar was titled "Working Together for Healthier Communities: The Prevention of Underage Drinking, Drugs, and Youth Gangs." Our team of community and school leaders attended workshops on various risk and protective factors and worked together to plan community-driven action plans that will reduce youth violence and substance use in Kailua and Waimanalo. Preliminary plans from the Community Action Seminar include planning for a "bridge" program/retreat for Waimanalo and Kailua Intermediate students who are about to transition into Kailua High School. This proposed retreat will allow for these students to meet one another and work together before high school, thereby easing tensions before they meet in high school. In addition, group members hope to plan educational assmeblies throughout the school year that promote a drug-free and non-violent identity, both in the school and wider community.
